Build a Stronger Bond Through Positive Training
Positive reinforcement is one of the most effective and humane ways to train your pet. By rewarding desired behaviours, you encourage your pet to repeat them creating a happy, confident, and well-behaved companion.
What is Positive Reinforcement?
Positive reinforcement means adding something your pet loves a treat, praise, or play immediately after they perform a desired behaviour. This makes them more likely to repeat that behaviour in the future.
1. Timing is Everything
Reward your pet within 2 seconds of the desired behaviour. Delayed rewards confuse pets and reduce the effectiveness of training. A clicker can help mark the exact moment of correct behaviour.
2. Use High-Value Rewards
Not all treats are equal. For new or difficult behaviours, use your pet's absolute favourite treat. Reserve these special rewards exclusively for training to keep them motivating.
3. Keep Sessions Short
Pets have short attention spans. Aim for 5–10 minute training sessions, 2–3 times a day. End on a positive note with a behaviour your pet already knows well.
4. Be Consistent
Use the same commands and reward the same behaviours every time. Inconsistency confuses pets and slows progress. Ensure all family members follow the same rules.
5. Gradually Reduce Treats
Once a behaviour is learned, transition from treats to intermittent rewards praise, play, or occasional treats. This actually strengthens the behaviour over time.
6. Never Punish
Punishment creates fear and damages trust. If your pet makes a mistake, simply withhold the reward and try again. Patience and consistency always win.
